A few honest tips before you drive
Most companies rent from age 21, sometimes with a few years of licence required — always check before booking.
Driving is on the right. Speed limits: 40 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on regional roads, 90–110 km/h on expressways.
On narrow mountain roads, uphill traffic has priority — pull aside if you're descending and a vehicle is coming up.
Fill up before heading into the mountains — fuel stations are scarce around Theth, Valbonë and the far north.
The A1 motorway has a toll — check current rates before travelling. Most other major roads are toll-free.
Book full-protection insurance before arrival — some local companies offer add-ons at the desk that may duplicate what you already have.
Download offline Google Maps before you go. Signal drops in the mountains, and road data around Gjirokastër and Krujë can be outdated.
Fuel attendants fill your tank at stations — there's no self-service. Tipping a small amount is appreciated but not expected.
