The short answer
Gjirokastër is about 230 km south of Tirana and roughly 3.5 to 4 hours by road, with the airport connection on top. It sits directly on the route to Sarandë, the Blue Eye and Butrint, so it pairs naturally with the deep south rather than being a destination you double back from.
Getting out of the airport
Tirana International Airport sits about 17 km north of the city, roughly 20 to 30 minutes away. The LU-NA airport bus runs to central Tirana around the clock, every hour on the hour, taking 30 to 40 minutes and stopping behind the Palace of Opera and Ballet, a few minutes from Skanderbeg Square. Official airport taxis wait in front of the terminal — yellow, branded TAXI Tirana Airport, with the Auto Holiday Albania and airport logos on both sides.
Rental car — the flexible way
The drive south takes about 3.5 hours from Tirana on the A2 motorway and SH4. A car is the easiest way to reach the steep old town without a long walk uphill, and it lets you pair Gjirokastër with the Blue Eye spring, Sarandë and the Riviera, all within an hour or two further south.
Bus and furgon — the cheap way
Airport bus into central Tirana, then a bus or furgon from the southern departure area. There are several departures a day, spread mostly across the morning and into the evening, and buses heading to Sarandë usually stop at or near Gjirokastër. Operators seen on this route include Argjiro and Tirka 2000. Confirm departures locally — the spread across the day matters more here than on the northern routes.
Which option is right for you
If you are continuing to Sarandë or Ksamil afterwards, a rental car turns the whole south into one trip. If Gjirokastër is the destination itself, the coach is comfortable enough and considerably cheaper. A transfer makes sense arriving late, since the last useful departure south leaves earlier than you might expect.
Where these times come from
This guide is assembled from the legs covered in detail elsewhere on the site: /guides/tirana-airport-to-tirana-city, /guides/tirana-to-gjirokaster. Each leg guide carries the current fares and departure points for that stage. No end-to-end door-to-door time is given here, because the airport sits 17 km north of Tirana and nobody has measured the combined run — add the legs, then add waiting time between them, and confirm anything that changes with the operator.

Practical tips
- → Gjirokastër is on the way south, not a detour — worth a night rather than a day trip from the coast.
- → The old town is steep; where you park or get dropped makes a real difference to the walk.
- → Buses to Sarandë commonly stop here, which gives you more departures than the Gjirokastër-only services suggest.
