The short answer
Valbonë is the one destination here where your arrival time matters more than the distance. There is no road in from the west: you cross Lake Koman by ferry, and the boat runs once a day in each direction. The minivans that meet it leave Tirana before dawn. Landing in the afternoon almost always means a night in Tirana or Shkodër first, and that is a feature of the route rather than bad planning.
Getting out of the airport
Tirana International Airport sits about 17 km north of the city, roughly 20 to 30 minutes away. The LU-NA airport bus runs to central Tirana around the clock, every hour on the hour, taking 30 to 40 minutes and stopping behind the Palace of Opera and Ballet, a few minutes from Skanderbeg Square. Official airport taxis wait in front of the terminal — yellow, branded TAXI Tirana Airport, with the Auto Holiday Albania and airport logos on both sides.
Plan the flight around the ferry, not the reverse
The operator runs Koman to Fierzë in the morning and the return from Fierzë in the early afternoon, and the whole chain of minivans is built around those two sailings. Work backwards: pick the day you want to be on the boat, then arrange the night before in Tirana or Shkodër, then book the flight. Arriving at midday and hoping to reach the valley the same day is the one plan that reliably does not work.
Getting from the airport into the chain
Take the airport bus or a taxi into central Tirana and stay the night, or continue to Shkodër, which puts you closer to the docks and shortens the early start. Shkodër is the more common choice for this trip, and guesthouses there will usually arrange the whole onward chain for you. The full ferry route, including the crossing and the furgon up the valley, is covered in the Tirana to Valbonë guide.
If you are driving
A rental car collected at the airport can go on the ferry, but vehicle space is limited and the operator wants a reservation in advance. You can also drive round overland via Bajram Curri and skip the boat entirely — slower, and you miss the crossing, which for most people is the reason to come this way.

Practical tips
- → Land the day before. The minivans to the docks leave Tirana before dawn.
- → Shkodër is the better overnight than Tirana if Valbonë is the goal.
- → There is no cash machine in the valley — draw lek before you go.
- → Confirm the sailing the day before; one boat a day means a missed connection costs 24 hours.
