Vlorë to Himarë: The Riviera Coast Road (Seasonal)

How to travel the Albanian Riviera from Vlorë to Himarë over the Llogara Pass — Riviera buses, furgon, rental car or transfer. Honest, seasonal advice on frequency.

The short answer

From Vlorë the road climbs the Llogara Pass and drops onto the Riviera, reaching Dhërmi in about 1 hour 15 and Himarë in around 1.5 to 2 hours. It's one of Europe's great coastal drives. Bus frequency is very seasonal — good in summer, sparse the rest of the year — so plan around that.

Riviera buses and furgons — seasonal

In summer, regional buses (including Riviera Bus services) run the Vlorë–Dhërmi–Himarë–Sarandë coast several times a day — roughly 4 to 6 daily — at about €5–10 per leg. Outside the summer season these services drop sharply or stop, and furgons fill the gaps unreliably. Times change year to year, so check current Riviera schedules locally or with the operator before you rely on a bus, especially in spring and autumn.

Rental car — the scenic choice

A car is the best way to enjoy this stretch. You can stop at the Llogara Pass viewpoint (over 1,000 m above the sea), then drop down to Dhërmi, Jalë and Himarë, pulling over at coves along the way. The road is winding and slow — go easy and allow more time than the distance suggests.

Taxi or private transfer

A private transfer or taxi runs door to door and is worth considering off-season, when buses are scarce, or with luggage. Agree the fare in advance, as coastal transfers vary by distance and season.

Which option is right for you

In peak summer, the regional bus is cheap and works well. To explore the coves and villages at your own pace — or to travel outside summer when buses dry up — a rental car or transfer is far more reliable. Himarë and Dhërmi both make good Riviera bases.

Practical tips

  • Bus frequency is seasonal — abundant in summer, scarce off-season.
  • The Llogara Pass viewpoint is a must-stop if you drive.
  • The coast road is winding — allow more time than the map suggests.
  • Off-season, plan a car or transfer rather than relying on buses.
