Tips for Renting a Car in Albania

Renting a car in Albania is one of the best ways to explore the country. From beaches and mountain roads to historic cities and small villages, having your own car gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace and discover places that are harder to reach by bus.

Most rental companies in Albania allow drivers from age 21, but you may need to have held your driver’s license for at least three years. Some companies may allow younger drivers for an extra fee, so always check the rental conditions before booking.

You usually do not need an international driver’s license to drive in Albania, but it is still smart to confirm this with your rental company before your trip.

Driving is on the right side of the road. Common speed limits are around 40 km/h in towns, 80 km/h outside towns, 90 km/h on expressways, and 110 km/h on highways. In mountain areas, remember that uphill traffic usually has priority on narrow roads.

Gas stations are easy to find in cities and along main roads, but they are less common in remote mountain areas. Always fill up before heading into places like Theth, Valbona, or other rural routes. At many stations, an attendant will pump the fuel for you.

For navigation, Google Maps works well, but download offline maps before you start driving. Mobile signal can be weak in mountains and countryside areas. Also, do not rely on Google Maps completely. In places like Gjirokastër or Krujë, some roads may be closed or incorrectly marked. If your hotel or host gives you directions, follow their advice.

A rental car can make your Albania trip much easier, more flexible, and more memorable — just drive carefully, plan your route, and enjoy the journey.
