Tirana to Theth: How to Get There (Seasonal)

How to reach Theth in the Albanian Alps from Tirana — via Shkodër and a 4x4 mountain minivan. Honest, seasonal advice: access is limited outside late spring to autumn.

The short answer

There's no direct Tirana–Theth bus. You travel in two legs: Tirana to Shkodër (about 2 hours), then a rugged 4x4 minivan from Shkodër up to Theth (roughly 2.5 hours over the mountain). This is a seasonal route — access is realistic from about late May to October, and mountain roads, minivans and guesthouses are often closed or very limited in winter.

Leg 1 — Tirana to Shkodër

Take a frequent furgon or bus from Tirana to Shkodër (around 2 hours, roughly €5–7). Shkodër is where all Theth transport begins, so you'll base your onward plan here.

Leg 2 — Shkodër to Theth by minivan

From Shkodër, shared 4x4 minivans climb to Theth over a steep mountain road in about 2.5 hours, for roughly 1,500–2,000 lek (about €12–18) per person. In the core season there's typically at least one morning departure, with more services added in peak summer. Because they leave in the morning, most travellers spend a night in Shkodër first to catch one. Book your seat a day ahead through your Shkodër guesthouse.

Driving yourself

You can drive in summer, but the final stretch into Theth is a narrow, rough mountain road best suited to a higher-clearance vehicle or 4x4 — not a small city rental, and not advisable in poor weather or outside the season. Many visitors prefer the shared minivan and leave the driving to a local.

Season and planning

Theth is a summer-and-shoulder destination. From roughly November to April the road can be impassable, minivans stop running, and most guesthouses close. Plan for late spring through early autumn, book guesthouses ahead by WhatsApp in July–August, and always confirm current minivan departures locally — schedules change with demand and weather.

Practical tips

  • No direct bus — go via Shkodër, and expect to overnight there to catch the morning minivan.
  • Access is seasonal: plan for roughly late May to October.
  • Book the Shkodër–Theth minivan a day ahead through your guesthouse.
  • Bring cash in lek and euros — mountain guesthouses are often cash-only and half-board.
