Ksamil to Butrint: How to Get There

The short hop from Ksamil to the UNESCO ruins of Butrint — local bus, taxi or car. If you're based in Ksamil you don't need to backtrack via Sarandë.

The short answer

Butrint is approximately 4 km south of Ksamil, at the end of the coastal road. The journey usually takes around 15 minutes, although peak-summer traffic and parking near the archaeological site can add time. There is no need to travel back to Sarandë first: the Sarandë–Butrint bus passes through central Ksamil, and you can also take a short taxi ride or drive.

Local bus — the cheapest option

The Sarandë–Butrint coastal bus passes through central Ksamil and continues to Butrint, its final stop. Board along the main road through Ksamil and expect to pay approximately 150 lek in cash to the conductor. The journey takes around 15 minutes. During high season, buses typically run about every 30 minutes, but service becomes less frequent outside summer. Timings can change, so confirm the current departure point and return options locally.

Taxi or private transfer

A taxi usually reaches Butrint from Ksamil in approximately 10–15 minutes, depending on traffic. It can be convenient for groups or when the bus schedule does not suit your plans. Agree on the fare before departure and arrange your return in advance, especially outside high season when taxis may not be waiting near the entrance.

Driving yourself

Butrint is a short drive south of Ksamil along the coastal road. Parking is available near the entrance, but spaces can become busy during peak summer periods. Driving gives you more flexibility over your arrival and return time, but allow additional time for traffic around Ksamil and the archaeological site.

Crowds and getting back

Butrint gets hot and busy from late morning, so aim for an early bus (the first run in the morning) to see the ruins in cooler, quieter conditions. Plan your return before you go: because Butrint is the end of the line, buses back run through Ksamil toward Sarandë through the afternoon, but the last reliable service leaves earlier than you might expect — confirm it locally, or keep a taxi option in mind so you're not stranded at the site.

Which option is right for you

Based in Ksamil, the coastal bus is cheap and easy — just board in town rather than heading back to Sarandë. If you'd rather not watch the clock, take a taxi (ideally one that waits) or drive. Either way, go early: Butrint rewards a calm morning far more than a crowded midday visit.

Practical tips

  • Confirm the last afternoon return so you're not stranded at the ruins.
  • Carry cash in Albanian lek, as some drivers may not accept cards.
  • No café inside the park — bring water, especially in summer.
