Tirana to Berat: How to Get There

How to get from Tirana to Berat, the UNESCO 'city of a thousand windows' — furgon, bus, rental car or transfer — with real travel times and honest prices.

The short answer

Berat is about 120 km south of Tirana and roughly 2 to 2.5 hours by road — one of the easiest day trips or first stops from the capital. Furgons and buses run frequently, or you can drive or take a transfer. It's a comfortable half-day journey either way.

Furgon and bus — cheap and frequent

Buses and furgons to Berat leave from the southern departure area in Tirana, running frequently through the day (roughly hourly, with the most departures in the morning). The fare is only about 400–600 lek (around €4–6), cash. Furgons leave when full, so mornings are more comfortable than the midday heat. Ask your accommodation to confirm the current departure point, as Tirana's terminals occasionally move.

Rental car — easy and scenic

The drive is a straightforward 2 hours or so on good roads. A car lets you add the Osum Canyon or the Belsh wine area, both short drives from Berat, and reach the old-town parking without hauling bags across town.

Taxi or private transfer

A private transfer or taxi does the trip door to door in about 2 hours — worth it with luggage, a family, or a tight schedule. Agree the fare before you set off.

Which option is right for you

For the cheapest trip, take a morning furgon. For freedom to explore the canyon and wine country, rent a car. For zero hassle, book a transfer. Berat rewards an overnight — the old town is magical once the day-trippers leave.

Practical tips

  • Take a morning furgon — they're comfier and more frequent than midday.
  • Carry cash in Albanian lek, as some drivers may not accept cards.
  • Confirm the exact departure point with your Tirana guesthouse before setting out.
  • Stay overnight to enjoy Mangalem and Gorica after the crowds go.
