The short answer
Shkodër is only about 110 km north of Tirana — roughly a 2-hour trip and one of the country's easiest intercity connections. It's the springboard for the northern Alps (Theth and Valbonë via the Koman ferry), Lake Shkodër and the Montenegro border. Go by furgon or bus, rental car, or transfer.
Furgon and bus — cheap and frequent
Furgons and buses to Shkodër run very frequently through the day from the northern departure area in Tirana. Locally, the furgon fare is cheap — around 400–700 lek (roughly €5–7), cash. Note that international booking sites and tourist coaches sometimes quote €15 or more for the same route; the local furgon is much cheaper. Departure points in Tirana shift occasionally, so ask your accommodation for the current spot.
Rental car — quick and easy
The drive north on the SH1 highway takes well under 2 hours and is one of Albania's more relaxed routes. A car is especially handy if you plan to explore Lake Shkodër, cross into Montenegro, or reach the Koman ferry for the Alps.
Taxi or private transfer
A private transfer does the trip door to door in about 1.5 to 2 hours — convenient if you're heading straight for the mountains or arriving on a late flight. Agree the fare before departure.
Which option is right for you
For the cheapest, most local experience, take a furgon. To continue into the Alps or around the lake, a rental car pays off. For comfort with luggage, book a transfer. If Theth or Valbonë is your goal, Shkodër is where you'll change onto a mountain minivan or the Koman ferry.
