The short answer
Berat and Gjirokastër are Albania's two UNESCO Ottoman towns, about 3 hours apart by road. There's a direct bus, but only a couple of departures a day, so timing matters. A rental car or a private transfer gives you more freedom, and both towns pair naturally on a route between central Albania and the south.
Bus — direct but limited
A direct bus links Berat and Gjirokastër in about 3 hours for roughly 1,200 lek (around €11–12). The catch is frequency: sources typically report only about two departures a day from Berat (often mid-morning and early afternoon), so plan around them and arrive early to get a seat. Note that Berat's bus terminal sits a short ride outside the old-town centre. Times and fares change seasonally, so confirm locally before you rely on them.
Rental car — the flexible way
Driving takes about 3 hours and frees you from the sparse bus timetable. It also lets you stop along the way and continue easily to the Blue Eye, Sarandë and the Riviera, which lie beyond Gjirokastër to the south.
Taxi or private transfer
A private transfer covers the route door to door with no waiting for scheduled buses — the easiest option with luggage or a tight itinerary, though pricier than the bus. Agree the fare before departure.
Which option is right for you
On a budget, take the direct bus but build your day around its limited departures. For flexibility — or if the bus times don't fit — drive or arrange a transfer. Either way, both towns reward an overnight rather than a rushed same-day dash.
