Tirana Airport to Shkodër: How to Get There

Tirana Airport to Shkodër, the springboard for the Albanian Alps — and one of the country's easiest connections, with the airport already north of the city.

The short answer

Shkodër is only about 110 km north of Tirana, roughly a 2-hour trip and one of the country's easiest intercity connections. The airport is already 17 km north of the city, so this is the one direction where arriving by air puts you closer rather than further away. Shkodër is the springboard for Theth and Valbonë via the Koman ferry, for Lake Shkodër, and for the Montenegro border.

Getting out of the airport

Tirana International Airport sits about 17 km north of the city, roughly 20 to 30 minutes away. The LU-NA airport bus runs to central Tirana around the clock, every hour on the hour, taking 30 to 40 minutes and stopping behind the Palace of Opera and Ballet, a few minutes from Skanderbeg Square. Official airport taxis wait in front of the terminal — yellow, branded TAXI Tirana Airport, with the Auto Holiday Albania and airport logos on both sides.

Rental car — the flexible way

The drive north on the SH1 highway takes well under 2 hours from Tirana and is one of Albania's more relaxed routes. A car is especially useful if you plan to explore Lake Shkodër, cross into Montenegro, or reach the Koman ferry for the Alps, none of which are convenient without one.

Bus — go straight there

Hermes runs a direct airport-to-Shkodër shuttle, listed on the airport's own transport page, with a handful of departures spread across the day. Take it. This guide used to send you into central Tirana first, which meant travelling south past the airport and then north again to a city the airport is already closer to than Tirana is. Check the current departure times before you fly; there are only a few a day and they are seasonal.

If the direct times do not work

Furgons to Shkodër leave the northern departure area in Tirana very frequently, so the two-leg route is a reliable fallback and barely timetable-dependent. Be clear about which airport bus you take, though: the LU-NA service to the city centre stops behind the Palace of Opera and Ballet, while a separate shuttle serves the North and South terminals and runs daytime hours only. The local furgon is substantially cheaper than the tourist coaches quoted on international booking sites for the same journey.

Which option is right for you

For Shkodër itself the furgon is hard to beat: frequent, cheap and quick. Take a car if the Alps or the lake are the real plan. A transfer is worth it mainly if you are heading straight for an early Koman ferry and cannot risk the connection.

Where these times come from

This guide is assembled from the legs covered in detail elsewhere on the site: /guides/tirana-airport-to-tirana-city, /guides/tirana-to-shkoder. Each leg guide carries the current fares and departure points for that stage. No end-to-end door-to-door time is given here, because the airport sits 17 km north of Tirana and nobody has measured the combined run — add the legs, then add waiting time between them, and confirm anything that changes with the operator.

Practical tips

  • → Going north, the airport's position works in your favour for once — it is on the right side of Tirana.
  • → If the Alps are the goal, check the Koman ferry's own schedule before fixing your Shkodër arrival.
  • → Furgons here are frequent enough that you rarely need to plan around a specific departure.
