The short answer
Tirana International Airport (TIA, also called Rinas or Nënë Tereza) to Sarandë is roughly 230–280 km and about 4 to 4.5 hours by car down the coast. There is no single direct public bus from the airport itself, so your realistic options are a private transfer, a self-drive rental car, or a bus with a change in Tirana. Sarandë is the main hub of the southern Riviera and your gateway to Ksamil, Butrint and the Blue Eye.
Private transfer or taxi — the easy way
A pre-booked door-to-door transfer takes you straight from the airport to your Sarandë hotel in about 4 to 4.5 hours with no changes — by far the most comfortable option after a long flight, and the easiest with luggage or family. Use a trusted local company and agree the fare before you set off rather than at arrival. Prices vary by season and vehicle, so confirm the current rate when you book.
Rental car — the flexible way
Pick up a car at the airport and drive south via the A2 motorway and SH4 through Fier and onto the coastal road. It's about 4.5 hours without stops, but the real appeal is stopping along the way — Berat, Vlorë, and the dramatic Llogara Pass all sit near the route. Book ahead in summer, and note the coastal section is winding rather than motorway, so allow extra time.
Bus and furgon — the cheap way
The budget route is airport bus to central Tirana, then a long-distance bus or furgon (shared minivan) from Tirana to Sarandë — roughly 5 to 6 hours on the road, plus the transfer and waiting time. It's the cheapest way by far, but slow and with at least one change. Services are more frequent in summer; check departure times locally as schedules shift seasonally.
Which option is right for you
Travelling with family or arriving late? A private transfer is worth every euro. On a tight budget with time to spare? Take the bus. Planning to explore the Riviera and day-trip from Sarandë? Rent a car for the freedom. One more option worth comparing: many travellers fly into Corfu in Greece instead and take the 30-minute ferry to Sarandë — sometimes quicker than the drive from Tirana.

Practical tips
- → Leave early — the coastal road is scenic and slow, not motorway the whole way.
- → Carry cash: euros and lek. Not every stop takes cards.
- → If you land late at night, a pre-booked transfer beats hunting for a bus.
- → Compare flying into Corfu + the Sarandë ferry — it can save hours.
