About this destination

Why Berat belongs on your route

Berat's Ottoman quarters of Mangalem and Gorica face each other across the Osum river — white houses with rows of timber-framed windows climbing the slope, and a working medieval castle on top still inhabited by local families. The Tomorr valley below is Albania's finest wine region, with several family wineries open for tastings. Walkable in a day, perfect in two.

What to see in Berat

1

Berat Castle (Kalaja)

A fortress at 214 m still home to a community of residents, churches and the Onufri Museum. Walk up from Mangalem in 20 minutes — the views over the Osum valley are spectacular.

2

Mangalem Quarter

The iconic lower quarter — white Ottoman houses with rows of oversized windows climbing the hillside, earning Berat its UNESCO nickname 'city of a thousand windows'.

3

Gorica Quarter

The quieter mirror of Mangalem on the opposite bank of the Osum. Less touristy, with its own restaurants and bars — best explored after crossing the Gorica Bridge at golden hour.

4

Gorica Bridge

An 18th-century seven-arch stone footbridge linking Mangalem and Gorica across the Osum river. One of Berat's most photographed spots, especially at sunset with both quarters reflected in the water.

5

Onufri Iconographic Museum

Inside the Cathedral of the Dormition within the castle walls. Holds paintings by Onufri, Albania's greatest 16th-century icon painter, alongside Orthodox works spanning six centuries.

6

Ethnographic Museum

A preserved 18th-century Ottoman mansion in the Mangalem quarter with original furnishings and textiles showing daily Albanian life across the centuries.
