About this destination

Why Osumi Canyon belongs on your route

The Osumi Canyon stretches 26 km south of Berat, carved over millennia by the Osum River through grey limestone. The walls reach 100 metres at their tallest, pinching in places to just a few metres wide. In spring, waterfalls pour off the rim and guided rafting is the best experience (3–4 hrs, ~€20–35 per person). In summer the river drops — walk the canyon floor in water shoes or try tubing. The Vrima e Nuses cliff viewpoint and the iconic wooden Osumi Bridge are both accessible without getting wet. The Bogovë Waterfall (10 m cascade into a turquoise pool) is 45 minutes away and worth combining. Base yourself in Berat.

Top attractions

What to see in Osumi Canyon

1

Rafting the Canyon

Guided rubber-raft trips depart from a put-in point 30 minutes from Berat. The 3–4 hour run passes through the narrowest sections, under waterfall curtains and into turquoise swimming pools. Book through your Berat guesthouse; runs April–June. Around €20–35 per person.

2

Tubing & Canyoning

In summer when the river drops, tubing and canyoning take over — the canyoning route includes hiking, swimming, rock slides, waterfall jumping and an optional 55 m abseil. A different but equally spectacular experience to rafting.

3

Vrima e Nuses Viewpoint

A dramatic cliff-edge platform overlooking a sweeping bend of the canyon — 'the bride's hole' in local legend. One of the most photographed spots along the gorge rim, no hiking experience required.

4

Osumi Canyon Bridge

An iconic wooden footbridge spanning the gorge, accessible via a short uphill trail. The bridge has gaps between the planks — walk carefully, but the view straight down into the river is extraordinary.

5

Canyon Rim Trail

A footpath follows the southern rim of the canyon with dramatic views into the gorge. No technical skill needed — a 2–3 hour walk with multiple viewpoints, open year-round.

6

Bogovë Waterfall

A 10 m waterfall cascading into a turquoise pool, about 45 minutes from Berat (1 hour including the 25-minute walk from the parking area). Best in spring and early summer when flow is strongest.
