Why Apollonia belongs on your route
Apollonia was once one of the wealthiest Greek cities on the Adriatic, where Julius Caesar studied rhetoric and from which he dispatched troops during the civil war. The hilltop site today holds the bouleuterion façade, an odeon, the Roman library, and the lovely Monastery of St. Mary at its centre. Quiet, atmospheric, and an easy half-day from Vlorë or Berat.

What to see in Apollonia
Bouleuterion
The best-preserved building at the site — a 2nd-century BC council chamber with a colonnaded façade of Corinthian columns still standing to near full height. The defining image of Apollonia.
Monastery of St. Mary
A 13th-century Byzantine monastery built within the ancient ruins and still in use. The church has original frescoes and the quiet courtyard is one of the most peaceful spots in central Albania.
Odeon
A small covered theatre at the heart of the site, used for musical performances and council debates. The tiered seating and stage front are well preserved.
Roman Library
A portico with column stumps marking what was once a Roman public library — one of only a handful of such buildings surviving anywhere in the Balkans.
Apollonia Archaeological Museum
Housed in the monastery buildings, the museum displays sculpture, coins, ceramics and architectural fragments from 1,000 years of Greek and Roman occupation.
Olive Grove Circuit
A 2 km path through the ancient city, passing ruins at intervals through old olive trees. The unhurried circuit takes about 1.5 hours and is the best way to see the full extent of the site.
