About this destination
Shkodër is flat, bicycle-friendly and sits on the southern shore of Lake Skadar — Europe's largest lake, shared with Montenegro and home to exceptional birdlife. It is also the main departure point for the Komani Lake ferry into the Albanian Alps, and well worth a night for Rozafa Castle at sunset and the Marubi photography museum.

The specials it prices on its own page are tavë kosi, tavë dheu, a mixed grill, and a traditional combination plate of fli, japrak, stuffed peppers, imam bajaldi, vegetables, baked potatoes and fërgesë.

Shkodër
The ramparts sit above the point where the Buna, Drin and Kir rivers meet, which is the view everyone climbs for. The legend attached to it — a woman walled into the foundations so the castle would stand, permitted to leave one breast exposed to feed her son — is still told locally and is grimmer than the guidebooks suggest. Winter hours are shorter and it closes Mondays out of season.

Three generations of the Marubi studio photographed northern Albania from 1856 onward, and the archive runs to half a million negatives — highland clans, Ottoman officials, weddings, executions. It is the best hour indoors in Shkodër and the only place that makes the region's last century legible. Check the hours before going; published times disagree with each other.
