About this destination
Durrës is Albania's oldest continuously inhabited city, with a Roman amphitheatre in the middle of town and a long family-friendly beach 25 minutes from Tirana airport. It works well as a first or last night for travellers flying in or out. The southern stretch around Mali i Robit is quieter and backed by pine trees.
Top attractions
The largest Roman amphitheatre in the Balkans, dating from the 1st–2nd century AD, sitting improbably in the middle of the modern city. Capacity for 15,000–20,000 spectators and still partially excavated.
Roman-era mosaics, Greek ceramic vessels and Byzantine artefacts covering 4,000 years of Durrës history, displayed in a well-organised waterfront building.
Well-preserved sections of 6th-century Byzantine fortifications run through the town, including a striking Venetian tower still standing at the city's edge.
A 10 km sweep of sandy beach stretching south from the city — packed with families in summer. Head south to Spille or Mali i Robit for shade and less noise.
A wild and largely deserted headland 30 km north, with the ruins of a 15th-century chapel built by Skanderbeg. Sea views and complete peace on a weekday.
A lively seaside esplanade backed by cafés and restaurants, most animated at dusk when the city cools and the seafront fills with families and evening strollers.
