Mrizi i Zanave
The slow-food farm that put Albanian cuisine on the map. Long lunches, pastures out the window, raki at the end.

The oldest restaurant in the valley, open since 2005, and still the one trekkers aim for coming off the Theth pass. A whole goat turns on the outdoor fire; a second kitchen cooks for anyone who has reached their limit of meat, cream and butter, which happens on about day three. Open 1 May to 15 October — outside that the valley road is the problem, not the kitchen.

Berat
Old-town tavern in a stone basement — qofte, tave kosi, local Berat wine on tap.

Tirana
Tirana institution — the place locals send first-time visitors. Big menu, friendly prices, late hours.
