What is the Osumi Canyon?
The Osumi Canyon (also written Osum) is a 26 km limestone gorge carved by the Osum River in central Albania, just south of Berat. The walls rise 60–80 metres at their tallest, pinching in places to just a few metres wide. In spring, waterfalls cascade off the rim. It is commonly called the 'Albanian Grand Canyon' and is one of the country's most spectacular natural attractions — and still relatively unknown to international visitors.
Rafting the canyon (April–June)
The best time to raft is April through June when water levels are high and the river runs fast. Guided rubber-raft trips depart from a put-in point 30 minutes from Berat and take 3–4 hours. The route passes through the narrowest sections, under waterfall curtains and into swimming pools. Most operators are Berat-based — book through your guesthouse or ask in town. Expect to pay around €20–35 per person depending on group size.
Walking the canyon floor (July–October)
In summer the river drops and sections of the canyon floor can be walked through ankle-to-thigh-deep water. This slower, more contemplative experience is ideal for photographers and those who want more time to explore the rock formations and pools. Wear water shoes, bring water, and let someone know your route. No guide is strictly necessary in summer, but hiring a local adds safety and context.
The canyon rim trail
A footpath follows the southern rim with dramatic views into the gorge below. No technical skill needed — a comfortable 2–3 hour walk with multiple viewpoints over the canyon. The rim trail is open year-round and is the easiest way to appreciate the scale of the gorge without getting wet.
Getting there
The Osumi Canyon is 30–35 minutes by car south of Berat. Most visitors combine it with a Berat stay — rafting in the morning, the UNESCO old town in the afternoon. There is no public transport to the canyon put-in point. A rental car or a Berat-based day trip is the most practical option.
