About this destination
The Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) is a karst spring 15 km east of Sarandë where ice-cold water pushes up through a shaft more than 50 m deep in startling shades of blue. A 1.5 km shaded walk leads from the car park through plane trees to the spring. Combine easily with Gjirokastër on the same day.
Top attractions
A karst spring at least 50 m deep where water pushes up from the rock at around 10°C, creating an extraordinary disk of blue-white bubbles surrounded by vivid turquoise. Swimming in the eye itself is not allowed.
A suspended boardwalk over the spring mouth giving close-up views of the blue water. The best spot for photographs, best in the morning light.
The 1.5 km shaded path from the car park winds through plane trees and river meadows to reach the spring — a pleasant walk in its own right.
Smaller satellite springs and natural river pools along the Bistrica downstream from the eye — shallower and warmer than the main spring, possible for a gentle swim.
Grassy areas along the path are popular for family picnics in the cool shade. An excellent spot for an unhurried lunch stop between Sarandë and Gjirokastër.
The Blue Eye pairs naturally with either Sarandë (25 min south-west) or Gjirokastër (40 min north). Most visitors stop here en route between the two cities.
