How to choose your base
Albania is compact but the terrain slows you down, so it pays to pick two or three bases rather than moving every night. Most trips combine a stretch of the Riviera for the beaches, one UNESCO town for culture, and either Tirana or the northern mountains. Below are the areas we recommend by the kind of trip you're planning.
For a beach holiday — the Riviera
Ksamil is the postcard: turquoise islets and shallow water, ideal for families and couples who want to walk to the beach — but it's busy and quiet off-season. Sarandë is the practical base with the most hotels, transport links and nightlife, a short hop from Ksamil and the Blue Eye. Himarë strikes the best balance of beaches, character and calm. Dhërmi and Drymades are the boho beach-club end of the coast, popular with a younger crowd. Vlorë suits those who want a city with a beach and good onward connections.
For history and culture
Berat — the 'town of a thousand windows' — is the most atmospheric overnight, with Ottoman quarters and a lived-in castle. Gjirokastër, a stone city under a brooding fortress, is the other essential UNESCO base and pairs well with the south. Both make relaxed one- or two-night stops. Krujë, near Tirana, works as a shorter cultural detour with its bazaar and castle.
For the mountains
Theth is the headline Alpine village — guesthouses in a storybook valley, and the trailhead for the Theth–Valbonë hike. Valbonë sits at the other end of that famous walk. Shkodër is the gateway city where most northern trips begin, with the Komani Lake ferry and transport connections; it's a good base for a night before or after the mountains. These are seasonal — reachable roughly mid-June to October.
For the capital and nightlife
Tirana is worth one or two nights at the start or end of a trip. Stay in or near Blloku, the former closed party district that's now the city's dining and nightlife heart, walkable to Skanderbeg Square, the museums and Bunk'Art. It's also the main arrival airport, so it's the natural bookend to most itineraries.
A simple plan for first-timers
If you only want one structure to copy: two nights in Tirana, two in Berat or Gjirokastër for culture, and three or four on the Riviera (Sarandë or Himarë as your base).
