Theth Travel Guide — Albanian Alps

A storybook alpine valley of stone tower-houses, waterfalls and the legendary pass to Valbona.

Getting there

The classic way: furgon (shared minibus) from Shkodër. Departs the bus station at 07:00 in summer — arrive early to secure a seat. The road is unpaved in sections but fine for a standard SUV in summer.

The Valbona–Theth pass hike

The reason most people come. Seven to nine hours over a mountain pass — 1,600m at the top. Start from Valbona (reached via the Komani Lake ferry) and walk to Theth, or vice versa. Do it from west to east (Theth → Valbona) if you want the Komani ferry as your reward.

Theth waterfall & Blue Eye

Both within easy walking distance of the village. The waterfall is 30 minutes up the valley. The Blue Eye of Theth (separate from the one near Sarandë) is a cold karst spring 45 minutes upstream — bring a swimsuit if you're brave.

The kullas (tower houses)

The Lock-in Tower (Kulla e Ngujimit) near the church is the most intact example. Built for blood-feud isolation under the Kanun — the host fed you, no one could enter, you were safe.

From the road

Practical tips

  • Book guesthouses in advance in July–August — Theth has 2,500 people capacity and fills up.
  • Two nights is the minimum. Three lets you do the pass and recover.
  • Mobile signal is good in the village but gone on the pass — download offline maps.
