Shala River, Albania — The Remote Paradise on Koman Lake

One of the most remote and beautiful river canyons in Albania — reached by boat from the Koman Lake ferry, with turquoise water, canyon walls and total silence.

What is the Shala River?

The Shala River flows through a narrow limestone canyon in the far north of Albania before emptying into the Koman Lake reservoir. Its lower canyon — reachable only by motorboat from the Koman ferry — is one of the most strikingly beautiful places in the country. Turquoise water, sheer white limestone walls, silence. Almost no one from outside Albania knew about it ten years ago.

How to get there

Take the Koman Lake ferry from Koman (departs 9am daily in season) toward Fierza. About 90 minutes in, the boat will pass the Shala River mouth on the left. Arrange with a local motorboat captain at the Koman dam to take you up the Shala canyon — a 20–30 minute ride. Most travellers combine this with the ferry as a day trip from Shkodër. Alternatively, a few guesthouses operate near the Shala River mouth in summer.

Swimming, kayaking and activities

The canyon has a small sandy beach where the boat stops — a surreal spot of white sand and turquoise water hemmed in by white rock walls. Kayak and SUP board rentals are available at the river mouth. A zipline crosses the river near the Bee Eco Guesthouse. The Balkoni Viewpoint trail (45 minutes, moderate) climbs above the canyon for panoramic views of the turquoise water and limestone walls. The water is cold even in summer but very swimmable.

Staying on the Shala River

Most visitors come on a day trip from Shkodër, but staying at least one night transforms the experience. The Bee Eco Guesthouse (riverside lodge with restaurant and beach bar) is the best-known option. There is no ATM — bring enough cash for two days. Expect limited internet and very quiet evenings.

Best time to visit

June through September is the window. The Koman ferry departs between 9:00–10:00 AM daily; book through your accommodation or the Komani Lake Ferry Berisha website rather than relying on dock availability. September is excellent — cooler, quieter, the canyon at its best. The canyon is inaccessible in winter.

Practical tips

  • Book the Koman ferry the day before through your accommodation or the Komani Lake Ferry Berisha site — it departs 9–10 AM and dock tickets are not guaranteed.
  • Arrange the motorboat into the Shala canyon (20–30 min) with local operators at the Koman dam.
  • Bring cash — no ATMs anywhere near the Shala River.
  • Pack water shoes, a packed lunch, sun protection and warm clothes for the evening.
  • Stay minimum two nights for kayaking, the Balkoni Viewpoint hike and a genuinely unhurried experience.
  • Combine with Shkodër (1 hour away) for a perfect two-day north Albania loop.
