Ksamil vs Dhërmi: Which Albanian Beach Is for You?

Two of the Riviera's most famous beaches compared — islets and shallow turquoise vs beach clubs and mountain drama.

The short answer

Choose Ksamil for the iconic little islands, shallow calm water and a lively, family-friendly scene — it's the Riviera's most famous beach spot, and also its busiest. Choose Dhërmi for longer white-pebble beaches, stylish beach clubs, deeper clear water and a dramatic mountain backdrop, with more room to breathe. They sit about 1.5 hours apart on the same coast, so plenty of people visit both.

The beaches and water

Ksamil is a cluster of small sandy coves with tiny islets just offshore that you can swim or wade out to — the water is shallow, warm and calm, ideal for kids and floating around. Dhërmi (with neighbouring Drymades) is a long stretch of white pebbles with clearer, deeper water and mountains rising straight behind it; nearby Gjipe is a cove worth the short hike. Ksamil wins on that postcard islet look; Dhërmi wins on space and scenery.

Crowds and atmosphere

Ksamil is the single busiest beach on the Riviera in July and August — energetic and fun, but it can feel packed, and sunbeds fill early. Dhërmi is more spread out and relaxed, with boho beach clubs (Drymades in particular draws a younger crowd) and a more grown-up, design-led feel. If you want buzz and the classic Albania beach photo, Ksamil; if you want to lounge with a bit more calm, Dhërmi.

Location and getting there

Ksamil sits at the southern end of the Riviera, about 20 minutes from Sarandë and close to Butrint, the Blue Eye and the Corfu ferry — easy to reach and a great base for the deep south. Dhërmi is on the central Riviera along the SH8 coastal road below the Llogara Pass, roughly midway between Vlorë and Sarandë, which makes it a natural stop on a Riviera road trip.

Which suits you

Pick Ksamil if you're travelling with family, it's your first Riviera trip and you want the famous islets, or you're basing yourself near Sarandë. Pick Dhërmi if you love a beach-club day, want more space and mountain views, or you're driving the coast and want a stylish midway base. Both reward an overnight rather than a rushed day trip.

The verdict

You don't really have to choose — they're close enough to combine on one Riviera trip. If you only have time for one: Ksamil for the iconic shallow-water islets and family energy, Dhërmi for the beach clubs, space and scenery. Book either well ahead for peak summer, when the best stays sell out first.

Practical tips

  • Ksamil sunbeds and the best stays go fast in July–August — arrive early or book ahead.
  • In Dhërmi, Drymades is the livelier beach-club end; the main Dhërmi beach is a touch calmer.
  • Doing both? They're about 1.5 hours apart — an easy pairing on a Riviera road trip.
  • For fewer crowds at either, travel in June or September rather than peak August.
