Why Visit Butrint?
Butrint is more than just an archaeological site. It is also a protected natural area surrounded by wetlands, forests, and water. This makes it a perfect place for travelers who enjoy both culture and nature. The walking route is easy to follow and usually takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. Along the way, you can see some of the best-preserved ancient ruins in Albania.
The Theater of Butrint
One of the most famous sights in the park, this ancient theater dates back to the 3rd century BC and once held around 2,500 spectators.
The Sanctuary of Asclepius
An ancient healing site dedicated to Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine.
The Roman Forum
Once the center of public and commercial life in Butrint.
The Basilica and Baptistery
Important early Christian monuments from the Byzantine period. The baptistery is known for its mosaic floor, which is often covered for protection.
The Lion Gate
A historic city gate with a carved relief of a lion and bull, symbolizing strength and protection.
The Venetian Castle and Museum
Located at the highest point of the park, the castle offers great views and houses a small museum with artifacts found in Butrint.
Arriving: the entrance, parking and tickets
The main visitor entrance is at the end of SH81, roughly 4–5 km south of Ksamil — about a ten-minute drive — where the road simply stops at the Vivari Channel. The ticket office is at that entrance and the car park sits beside it, so you drive right up to the gate rather than walking in from anywhere. Coming without a car is easy too: the Sarandë–Ksamil bus continues to Butrint, which makes the park a straightforward half-day trip. A small cable ferry crosses the channel next to the entrance, but you do not need it to see the ruins — the archaeological site is all on the near bank.
Where to Stay
Most visitors stay in Ksamil or Sarandë. Ksamil is only about 10 minutes from Butrint and is perfect if you want beaches and turquoise water. Sarandë is around 30 minutes away and offers more restaurants, hotels, nightlife, and seaside promenades.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Butrint is in the morning or late afternoon. Spring and early autumn are ideal because the weather is warm but not too hot.
From the road
Practical tips
- → Arrive early, especially during summer, to avoid crowds and heat.
- → Bring water and snacks because there are no cafés or restaurants inside the park.
- → Wear comfortable shoes because you'll be walking on stone paths and uneven ground.
- → Do not skip the museum inside the Venetian castle. It helps explain the history of the site and is usually included with your ticket.
- → Plan around 2 hours for your visit, or longer if you want to take photos and explore slowly.
- → Drive all the way to the end of SH81 — the road terminates at the entrance, and there is no closer parking to look for.
