Why Voskopoja belongs on your route
Voskopoja (Vithkuq) sits 1,170 metres above sea level in the mountains above Korçë. In the 18th century it was a printing, trading and cultural capital — the most important Albanian city in the Ottoman world — with 24 churches, an academy and a population of 40,000. It was burned twice by Ottoman raiders in the 1780s and never recovered. Today it is a village of 300 people surrounded by alpine meadows. Eight churches survive, several with extraordinary original Byzantine frescoes dating to the 16th and 18th centuries — untouched and unfenced. You can walk between them in an hour. There are almost no other tourists. The silence and the frescoes will stay with you.

What to see in Voskopoja
Church of St. Nicholas (Shën Kolli)
The largest and best-preserved of Voskopoja's churches, built in 1721. The interior is covered floor-to-ceiling in Byzantine frescoes — saints, biblical scenes, donors — in vivid ochre, blue and red. Considered among the finest ecclesiastical art in all of Albania.
Church of the Holy Trinity (Shen Trini)
The oldest surviving church in Voskopoja, with frescoes from the 16th century. Smaller and quieter than St. Nicholas but deeply moving. The key is available from a caretaker in the village.
Church of St. Athanasios
Built in 1724. The exterior is unremarkable; the interior frescoes are extraordinary — large-scale compositions covering three walls with fine detail and vivid colouring that has barely faded in three centuries.
The Village Itself
Walk the stone lanes between the churches. There are no shops or restaurants (pack a lunch). The mountains above the village are open for walking. The view from the edge of the village back over the Korçë valley is exceptional.
